Today is the 76th week of making and delivering care bags for the homeless of Logan Square, Chicago. As of today, October 27, 2014, 404 care bags full of nutritious snacks, toiletries and assistance information have been delivered.

Tomorrow will be the 404th care bag delivered to the homeless. I’ve been thinking what I wanted to write about as we pass the 400 mark. 400 care bags…It seems impossible but here that number is. I have my ups and downs with these bags, wondering if they do any good at all and then something wonderful happens my spirits are back up again. Then I remember all the great people that have reached out in support and their stories with their interaction with the bags.

There’s a great deal of “hope” surrounding these bags. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of myself and the people that receive the bags. I always hope someone will see these posts and make care bags in their community. I hope my friends get involved. I hope my friends ease their judgment about this group of people. I hope the contents of the bags are wanted and helpful, I hope my relationship to the homeless is helpful. I often wonder if that pudding cup or piece of candy or particular food item will trigger a memory that takes them to a nice place, if even for a moment. I hope this will be the day that someone seeks help via the information in the care bag. I hope I can keep doing this for the rest of my life. Every bag is like sending out a message in a bottle, its full of mystery and hope. I want to thank you, my friends that have supported this endeavor in one form or another. A dialog has been created and I’m excited about what unopened doors lie ahead. Thanks for the sharing, the kind words, the “likes”, the donations and the positive reinforcement. Here’s to 405 care bags and beyond.

It’s a beautiful Fall day.  Everyone is in good spirits.  I spoke with Roger, he’s hopeful about a housing opportunity.  A local approached him with a series of buildings he owns in the city.  He offered Roger to stay within the building to help keep an eye on the property.  The building is in a bad section of town but would provide Roger with some shelter to get through the Winter.
